Things You Need To Know About Liposuction Surgery

Before the more conformist liposuction surgery, blood transfusions were important due to the quantity of blood cost throughout the procedure. Dr. Jeffrey Klein was the one who invented the tumescent technique that will let the patient go under the usual anesthesia as an alternative of general anesthesia to lessen blood loss. Tumescent liposuction still is dangerous especially when there are big volumes of liposuction fat/fluid being taken or if the patient has an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. Death rate is connected to abdominoplasty or abdominal liposuction. Some symptoms are; toxic shock, skin allergies, hematoma, unsightly wounds, nerve impairment and dermatitis.

One reason why tumescent liposuction causes less bleeding is due to the use of small microcannulae. This small cannulae can burrow into tissue more successfully resulting to lesser pain that lowers the number of anesthetic needed during the procedure. Usual areas for liposuction are the upper and lower abdomen, hips and flanks, inner and outer thighs, inner knees, arms, neck, ankles, calves and back.

The patient must be understandable and realistic enough to the results of their liposuction surgery. They can't expect total disappearance of cellulite, but it will surely improve. After the surgery, the patient needs to have a healthy living to retain the results. Not just physical expectation must be understood, but emotional ones too. The patient's goal for having this procedure might be to improve relationships and to get more appreciation from others; these are the reasons not to undergo cosmetic surgery of any type and should be recognized by the surgeon while having the initial consultation.

What will happen during the liposuction procedure?

First, the area of the skin will be prepared will be set with the disinfectant and the sites of insertion will be marked. A local anesthesia is to be used while the skin is cut open, widened and pretunneled using a small hemostat. After that, the anesthetic and a corticosteroid will be used to numb and avoid infection to the deep layers of tissue. The cannulae will be inserted and the surgeon will pass the cannulae to all areas that needs liposuction. The patient may be aware to see if any areas were missed and then the surgery is done. The surgery is performed as an outpatient that usually lasts for 2-3 hours depending on the case of the patient.

What will happen after the surgery?

Other surgeons will seam the sites of insertion while some allows them to drain causing less bruising and inflammation. The patient should wear garments that will compress the skin and pads that absorbs liquid right after the operation and will continue to wear them for weeks depending on the surgeon's decision. When the swelling reduces, the patient will need smaller garments. Some post-operation restrictions are; no showers, no lifting of heavy material, no work and no exercise up to the next appointment.
